Music Monday moves with The Tragically Hip ~ Ahead by a Century (@thehipdotcom)

Last week delivered devastating news for the music world, yet again.

Gord Downie, lead singer and songwriter of the iconic Canadian rock band, The Tragically Hip, announced he has terminal brain cancer. He is 52, married and with four children.

I cried upon hearing the news. I knew of a friend who died from the same type of cancer. Life can be so unfair it makes me want to scream at times.

Despite the diagnosis, the band has announced it will do one more Canadian tour following the release of their new album Man Machine Poem dropping June 17. Tickets go on sale shortly.

I’ve been listening to their music and will feature them over the coming weeks.

This is my favorite.

Eden, I just knew you would profile Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip today, and I’m glad that you will be doing this in the weeks to come. I was also hit hard by the news. I don’t know him personally, but I used to see him in the schoolyard all the time (his daughter was in one of my son’s kindergarten class) and he seemed like a “normal” dad…except he is far from normal. He is exceptional, and this news is so sad.

  3. The Tragically Hip, this brings me back. I can always count on you to help me recollect a moment in my history, music and memory being so interwoven.
It’s so sad to hear about Downie’s diagnosis. Another reminder to cherish each day.
