Inside the Author’s Mind – Melanie Comley

Author Melanie Comley is a woman with an independent spirit, and she fits right in with my month’s theme of ‘new beginnings.’ She’s not afraid to jump in and do things that she’s never tried before. Just read her bio and you’ll know what I mean. Living in one of my favorite countries to visit—France, Melanie is an accomplished author with multiple books available.

Please welcome Melanie Comley to ‘Inside the Author’s Mind.’

Luton born author, Mel Comley, has published her crime thrillers, Cruel Justice, Impeding Justice, and the latest in the series—Final Justice in ebook and paperback format.

Impeding Justice features feisty new Brit Cop, DI Lorne Simpkins in a gritty crime novel set in London. After The Unicorn kills her partner, Lorne knows if she doesn’t bring the underworld criminal to justice soon, she will be his next target. It’s a race against time, she has a 24 hour deadline to meet before her kidnapped daughter is used as a human bomb by the Unicorn. Can Lorne track the criminal down before it’s too late…

Visit Melanie’s Amazon author page to find all her books for sale.

Mel Comley left her job as a store manager in Worcester and moved to France nine years ago despite never having set foot in the country before. She renovated a French property, decorating 22 rooms in six months.

Renovation completed, she began to follow her dream of becoming a writer. After completing a creative writing course she penned a romance which was a near-miss with Mills & Boon. Then she decided to turn her hand to crime writing and DI Lorne Simpkins was born.

Impeding Justice is the first in a series of novels featuring Lorne Simpkins. The book has gained a Gold Star on the writer’s site, Authonomy, with a Harper Collins editor saying, “It keeps the reader focused on the dramatic interest of the story.”

One of Mel’s biggest influences in James Patterson and she hopes she has achieved her aim of making Lorne as memorable as his ‘Alex Cross’.
Impeding Justice has reached number 37 in the Amazon Kindle chart and Mel hopes it will be available in print in the near future. She has recently finished the third book in the series and this is currently sitting on her agent’s desk awaiting permission to release.

In her spare time, Mel loves pottering in her garden which has, for the past few years, won a local award. She also enjoys painting and walking her dogs.

Inside Melanie Comley’s Mind

What is your idea of perfect happiness?  Having a family picnic on my favourite beach in Normandy.

What turns you on creatively? Reading a gripping thriller usually sparks my imagination.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse? I have to keep in check the word ‘look’ for some reason, and my editor has just picked out that I use ‘she blew out a breath’ quite a lot, instead of just saying she exhaled! 😉

What quality do you most admire in a man? Trust. They can keep all their gifts of chocolates or flowers, if they can’t give me a reason to trust them then it’s time to say goodbye.

What quality do you most admire in a woman? Determination and the will to survive. I don’t think a woman should be reliant on a man.

What is your greatest regret? Getting married at 18.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? That I was twenty years younger and just starting out on my writing career.

What is your greatest fear? Snakes! An old boyfriend chased me with an eight foot python wrapped around his neck once.

Which living person do you most admire? My Mum. She’s tough when she needs to be and has always been a fantastic support to me, through good times and bad.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? I’d love to be a cop or detective really. I tried to sign up to the UK police but wasn’t fit at the time, and didn’t think I would pass a physical! LOL

If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be? A dolphin, I just think they’re beautiful creatures and love that they can beat up or kill something larger than themselves, like a killer whale!

What do you consider your greatest achievement? Writing my thriller series, which ultimately led to me finding my New York agent.

What is the trait you most deplore in others? The willingness to give up easily at the slightest hitch.

What is your greatest extravagance? Plants for my award winning garden. I’m not a girly girl. I have one handbag and a pair of shoes for all occasions, ie a pair of trainers for walking the dogs. A pair of every day shoes and a pair of evening shoes. When they wear out I buy another pair! Oh, I also have a pair of wellies for the garden too!

What is one thing you want to do before you die? Travel around my adopted country France. Do you know that 70% of French people don’t own a passport? I can understand why, there’s some much to see and the country is beautiful, why would you want to travel anywhere else?

What are some of your favorite curse words? I must admit I use the F word a lot in my writing, I’m trying to tone it down a bit though. 😉

What is your motto? Complete every task to the best of my ability.

Thanks Melanie for taking the time to be interviewed, and I wish you much success with all your books. Congratulations on your latest release in the Justice series.

Readers, please leave Melanie a comment and say “hi.”

Thanks for the great interview Eden, it was fun! 😉

  2. I look forward to all your interviews, Eden and Melanie is no exception. It takes a big heart and guts to move away from all that is ‘home’.

Melanie. Your covers make me want to read and I will, to see your talent! You must be part American at heart– the way you hold that gun. The redneck in me is sweating.

Haha! Dannie, I think deep down I am an American, love visiting and read nothing but American authors!

Thanks for the compliment, hope you like them. 😉 x

  5. Thank you for sharing this interview. I’m a big fan of Mel Comley’s books. Excellent author. 🙂

  6. Love how you moved to France without having lived there before, Melanie. I did the same with Cyprus. I too am not a girly-girl. Your books sound exciting, especially being set in good old London.

If ever (God forbid), anything happened to DH, I have it in my mind to move to France. I loved learning the language, and have a hankering for using it again. Greek is tough.

Thanks for sharing Melanie with us, Eden.

Thanks Glynis, if you do move here you’ll find the French very welcoming. Not sure how things will stand with regards to the EU situation, we might end up going back to blighty! ;-(
