Inside Derek Blass’ Mind

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Wow, talk about starting out with a deep one!  Perfect happiness is a world where none of us are shackled to a desk or an employer simply to be able to consume more and/or better things.  Perfect happiness is a place where the choices that people make, so long as they are not harmful to others, are their choices and no one else’s.

What turns you on creatively? Music, no doubt!  Radiohead gets me that melancholy edge that I love in parts of my writing.  Tool and Rage Against the Machine pump me up for the high pace action that generally marks my books.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse? LOL?  Haha.  Eh.  Shoot, I can’t answer without using them.  ;)

What quality do you most admire in a man? No whining.

What quality do you most admire in a woman? No whining.  I’m equal opportunity :)

What is your greatest regret? Not having taken greater advantage of my time at Duke in my undergraduate studies.  Wish I had worked and tried harder.  That being said, my current life is pretty spectacular, and if I had done anything differently in college, who knows where I would be.  It’s amazing how the slightest wrinkle in our past would so substantially alter the future.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would ask for more patience.  I am not a patient person, although my newborn baby girl is helping change that one day at a time!

What is your greatest fear? Not using every available minute of this short life to accomplish my goals.

Which living person do you most admire? Nelson Mandela.  To have that engrained a sense of justice and principle, just boggles my mind.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Hmm.  How about writing?  My full time job as an attorney is great, but it is taxing, and certainly difficult to juggle in conjunction with an attempted writing career.

If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be? Animate object: A lion.  Inanimate object: A Formula 1 race car.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? The last year.  In the last year, I have had a baby, written and published my first book, Enemy in Blue, written my second book, remained very active in community service/activism, remodeled a 1939 Tudor home on my own, and stayed relatively normal.  Relatively.

What is the trait you most deplore in others? Lack of a sense of justice.  I have a serious “right” and “wrong” meter in my brain and heart.  When people step on the wrong side of the line, I generally go ballistic.  It’s why I make a good trial lawyer :)

What is your greatest extravagance? Cars.  I like fast ones, pretty ones, and usually expensive ones.

What is one thing you want to do before you die? Retire.  Is that too negative?  Haha.  Seriously though, reach a point where I don’t have to worry about money, and I can focus entirely on service of others and my family.  On a completely fun note, there is a personal jet pack in development that I would love to try—after it has been thoroughly tested!

What is your present state of mind? Honestly? Fatigued beyond all belief.  I will cherish (CHERISH!) the first night of full sleep I get.  That being said, pretty darn happy otherwise!

What are some of your favorite curse words? Really?  Hmm, I think I already put every curse word in the world into my first book, Enemy in Blue!  Check in there ;)

What is your motto? Life is short and fragile.  Take advantage of everyday.

I feel a kindred connection to most of the responses you gave (well, insert puppy girl for baby, and it’s a bit closer) . . . the justice thing is paramount, and the search for a truth. Great way to live your writing life.

  9. Terrific interview, Derek and Eden!

  10. Thanks Justin and William for your comments, and showing support for Derek. Great of you!
